What To Do When You First Move In

Congratulations! You just closed on your home and it’s time to move in! But what should you do when you get there? It can be easy to get so excited that you overlook some practical tasks that go along with closing on a new home. Here are some tips for what to do right before you move in!

Change the locks on the exterior doors. As soon as the closing is over and you’ve gotten the keys to your house, either buy and install new lock sets or have a locksmith come to the house to switch them out. Truth be told, you might not know all the folks that have keys to this home. The previous owners, realtors, maintenance workers, and even the dog sitter could have keys to your home! For safety reasons, it’s essential for you to get new locks installed immediately.

Have the house deep cleaned. While many previous owners will leave the house clean for you, some won’t. Even if they do, you’ll want to clean everything for yourself. Hiring a service to do this for you will make the process more peaceful, but you can also do this yourself.

Paint all the walls and ceilings. This can be really time consuming, so you’ll probably want to hire professionals if you can. Hiring professionals is ideal especially if your walls have any cracks or holes. They will need to be patched correctly before any paint can be added. Also, if you’re short on time and the house is in dire straits and every surface needs painting, consider one neutral color for every room. This will just make it easier and limit the number of decisions you’ll have to make now. You can always go back and repaint rooms the colors you want- Check out our other articles about what colors are on trend for 2018!

Add some organization. It’s possible that your new home has limited organization in the closets; perhaps there are only simple poles and shelves in your bedroom! Make a trip to your home supply store to find some additions for your closets, laundry room, pantry, etc. Adding some extra places to put things will make your move-in much more seamless! Additions, too, will customize your space to your specific needs, making for a perfect move in. A place for everything, and everything in its place!
